The Belgian-Brazilian Conglomerate that owns Budweiser will help “Make America Great” again by renaming Budweiser to “America”.
Until the November election, Anheuser-Busch is renaming Budweiser, its most famous brand, as America.
All 12-ounce cans and bottles of Budweiser will feature the word “America” on their labels, instead of Budweiser, in the brand’s distinctive cursive font.
The temporary label swap, which starts on May 23 and will go through the presidential election in November, is meant “to inspire drinkers to celebrate America and Budweiser’s shared values of freedom and authenticity.”
The new cans and bottles will also feature lyrics from “The Star Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful.” A picture of the Statue of Liberty will appear on Budweiser’s 16 and 25 ounce cans as well as its 16-oz. bottles.
Anheuser-Busch was originally an American brewer, founded in St. Louis in 1852.
But the Belgian brewer InBev acquired Anheuser-Busch in 2008 to create the massive company called Anheuser-Busch InBev.
Font Logistics Not That Simple
CoDesign reports on the Font Logistics of “America”.
Exponential Patriotism
Changing the title wasn’t as simple as typing out a new label. Budweiser is a hand-drawn script that had to be recreated to spell our country’s name. The “A” in America was particularly challenging, because as the focal point of the word, it had to channel the same distinctive, swirly aesthetic of the Budweiser “B.”
The alterations don’t stop with the beer’s name. Almost every bit of type on the Budweiser label has been scrubbed away by Easter Egg patriotism, with new text citing the Pledge of Allegiance, the Star Spangled Banner, and America the Beautiful—all rendered in newly developed hand lettering, inspired by Budweiser’s archives.
To name just a few of the updates: “King of Beers” has been changed to “E Pluribus Unum,” “The World Renowned” changed to “Land of the Free,” and “Anheuser-Busch, Inc.” updated to read “Liberty & Justice For All.” Even legalese like “Trademark” was changed to “Indivisible,” and “Registered” changed to “Since 1776” (you know, the year America was founded—even though, technically, Budweiser wouldn’t be available for another 100 years).
Gee, this almost makes me want to stand up and salute. But first we need to know:
Mike “Mish” Shedlock
…. and it will still be crappy beer on the inside of the can.
I agree!.
I just may become a Bud drinker.
Bud Lite – the worlds worst beer. A long time ago I drank Bud, then I realized that was the reason I had a headache the next day. I consider Budweiser (or Bud by any other name) undrinkable. Just a long time beer-lover’s opinion.
You hd the headach because you just didn’t drink enough of the stuff …..
ha – no chance of that
.
.
Bud lite is actually the world’s 3rd best selling beer.
Snow (China) is the # 1.
.
. Which may be a reason they chose America.
And the words “Finest hops and barley” will now read “Too stupid to live”.
What ad agency talked them into this?
they know who will be winning the election by Summer
Reminds me of my neighbor in the ’60’s”: “If you don’t drink a case of Bud and eat a watermelon on the 4th of July, you’re a Communist!”
That said, InBev may be misreading the national mood.
They sell Bud in Canada. I wonder if they will change the name to America up here. That will be a marketing disaster. Maybe they will change it to Canada. I think even the name change in the US will hurt sales in Canada
North America
If Hillary wins, by lots of voting fraud, they will change the name to “Doomsday Prepper’s Beer”.
She won’t need voting fraud like Republicans have pulled these past few elections. She’ll win by a landslide and Trump can cry foul afterwards for the next 4 years. Maybe immediately start a petition to have her impeached BEFORE being sworn in. Yeah, there ya go!
This is an honest question to which I’m looking for an answer. How did America, with all of its German immigrants, end up with what is arguably the worst beer in the world. Bud, Schlitz, Genesee, Pabst, Old Vienna, Milwaukee (started by Gettelmans), etc. I haven’t tried any craft brews and this isn’t a comment on them. Have they just been cheapened over the years for the sake of profits? But is there really a significant cost difference between good beer and crummy beer?
Some people simply like crummy beer. I drink miller 64. Has a low-alcohol, low carb count. Can drink 2 of them for even something like Bud Light.
I have heard it blamed on prohibition, that beer makers put out lower quality after it ended, but no one cared. For myself, I’m not drinking America unless they Make America Great Again.
Talking to a Budweiser worker a few years ago and he told me Buds sales have been declining for years. I would still drink a Bud once and a while to do the American thing until they sold to InBev which was the end of that. InBev must be attempting to convince Americans that it is still an American brew. There are lots of Pilsners far superior to Bud. On a hot Oklahoma or Texas day I like to have a Peroni!
Peroni? How wonderfully decadent.
Something wrong there Ishmael: you stopped drinking Bud when a foreign company bought it, but you drink an Italian beer. Go figure!
BTW InBev has over 200 brands of beer including Corona, Becks, & Stella. Hard to tell what company makes some beers anymore. The big brewers are also buying up some of the craft breweries now.
Hey Ismael – foreign owned but brewed by hard working, well paid, Union American workers. I work at an AB brewery and we are trying real hard to brew quality beers consistently. We are brewing craft brews and nitro stouts as well. Trying to compete and produce what the beer drinking public wants. I love the IPAs, love a nice porter – also love an ice cold crisp Budweiser in the sun. Give it a shot . Prost!
When I want something lighter than a PA or IPA, I drink Coors. I just found out Coors is non-union (the union was decertified in 1978), so now I like it even better!
(I used to belong to a union, but not by choice)
In support of America they should use unfiltered water from Flint. Flint’s problem is symbolic of the US in general: screwed by government.
Rebellion would be a better name.
He probably won’t drink it… Trump does not drink.
What -Trump doesn’t drink? “Never trust a man who doesn’t drink”. I have actually found that to be true many times, now I have to re-think Trump.
I love Bud, consistent, high alcohol content, good bang for the buck…and a lot easier to say “gimme a Bud” than “give me a Budweiser” after you’ve had a few.
Craft beers are overpriced and always some order of skunky.
I guarantee you the advertising twits who came up with this brainstorm haven’t spent enough time throwing back ice cold Buds on a hot summer day. A bunch of pantywaists sipping white wine spritzers.
There is just no accounting for taste. Nothing is skunkier than Bud. Give me real beer, a Pale Ale or an IPA.
You don’t happen to work for InBev, do you jc?
I always think of Bud Lite drinkers as beginner beer drinkers; victims of undeveloped taste and a massive advertising campaign.
You are buying bad craft beer. (And there is PLENTY of bad craft beer out there.) Being that I don’t know where you live, try buying some Anchor or Sierra Nevada. They are everywhere.
Yup, 2 of my favorites, Beer Drinker. I have been to both breweries. I call Chico CA “Mecca”.
BTW Anchor has an IPA now also.
Trump doesn’t drink alcohol.
Thats un American
Neither did Hitler. And he was a vegetarian too
“All 12-ounce cans and bottles of Budweiser will feature the word “America” on their labels, instead of Budweiser, in the brand’s distinctive cursive font”.
and what will the Free Mason image be??
Somebody at some ad agency somewhere got paid handsomely to come up with this brilliant idea.
Un-f***ing believable.
You know, a better beer campaign would feature a picture of Hillary Clinton on one side, Donald Trump on the other side, and in the middle put any beer. Then the Tagline: “GO ON AMERICA, WE KNOW YOU NEED A DRINK.”
Then again this is probably a better idea for something like Vodka or Whisky. Go knows I need a drink every election cycle.
Good. Now the *real* Budweiser from the city of Budweis should finally use it’s real name instead of Czechvar.
If this was April 1st, I’d think this was a hoax.
Now I can piss America! Happy!
InBev made a good run buying popular brands, diluting ten percent, and raising prices. Meanwhile American craft brewers began making beers second to none in the world. Tastes are changing.
…
The big brewers, Anheuser-Busch InBev, MillerCoors, Heineken and Constellation fought back by purchasing the larger craft beer labels: Golden Road, Saint Archer, Lagunitas and Ballast Point. Dilution followed.
…
I noticed the change in my Lagunitas brew one month after it was bought out. I changed to a small brewer three miles down the road. My town has a hundred small craft brewers. I prefer double IPA, or brandywine beer. My brother prefers heavily malted low hops. A good brewer can fit your taste like a shoe.
…
The other day I learned that Egyptian pyramid builders were paid in beer because it was a staple food. Real beer has enough body to have nutritional value, and enough alcohol that you don’t need to drink a case. Your mileage may vary. ☺
Beer: another name for liquid bread.
This is a “New Coke” moment.
Exactly how stupid do they think the American consumer really is.
Fire the ad/marketing agency/department and leave the label alone. You don’t fuck with iconic.
Just a thought.
VicB3
Isn’t it weird how as time moves on, more and more the world events start to seem like a surreal cartoon dream? Are we sure we’re awake?
What do you mean, you hate America, pilgrim?
Gee. I think I will start drinking Budweiser, I mean America, to show my patriotism. Let’s make America, I mean Budweiser, great again.
Totally incredulous is all I can say. An iconic beer name, put on the shelf for something that means NOTHING in beer!!
I expect sales to tank.
I agree – Especially in Canada
Sounds like they’re going campy on purpose, trying to get hipsters to buy that swill for irony’s sake, like they do PBR. It won’t work, though.
I, however, will buy maybe one can, just to say that I once held America in the palm of my hand, drank it dry, and then p*ssed it away. Bet you didn’t know I was ever that powerful, eh?
ad agency too stupid to live; the FAIL is wow just cant even. Bud was piss water years ago, along with all corporate beers. if you cant make your own, buy local crafts.
