The UK is not the only country with increasing doubts about the EU.
A Pew Research Center study on Euroskepticism Beyond Brexit shows a huge dip in EU favorability across the board.
France has an even lower overall favorable rating of the EU than the UK. The favorable score is 38% in France, 44% in the UK.
The British are not the only ones with doubts about the European Union. The EU’s image and stature have been on a roller coaster ride in recent years throughout Europe. In a number of nations the portion of the public with a favorable view of the Brussels-based institution fell markedly from 2012 to 2013 as the European economy cratered. It subsequently rebounded in 2014 and 2015. But the EU is again experiencing a sharp dip in public support in a number of its largest member states.
EU favorability is down in five of the six nations surveyed in both 2015 and 2016. There has been a double-digit drop in France (down 17 percentage points) and Spain (16 points), and single-digit declines in Germany (8 points), the United Kingdom (7 points) and Italy (6 points).
Young people – those ages 18 to 34 – are more favorable toward the European Union than people 50 and older in six of the 10 nations surveyed. The generation gap is most pronounced in France – 25 percentage points – with 56% of young people but only 31% of older people having a positive opinion of the EU. There are similar generation gaps of 19 points in the UK, 16 points in the Netherlands, 14 points in Poland and Germany, and 13 points in Greece.
Ever Closer Union – Not
Despite having an unfavorable rating of 61%, nearly as many French want more power given to the EU than taken away.
That said, there is not a single country in support of giving the EU more power.
Migration Crisis
Every nation strongly disagrees with the Eu handling of migration.
Fed Up With the EU
Clearly the UK is not the EU’s only problem. People are fed up.
Frustration shows not only in EU polls, but in the rise of parties on the left in some countries and on the right in others.
Voters everywhere stew over the economy. We have not yet reached a flash point, but it’s coming.
Mike “Mish” Shedlock
Just a bunch of pitiful whiners, Mish. The European Union (EU) has worked out spectacularly well for the more than 504 million people living within the 28 countries that form the EU and resulted in the greatest level of German influence over the European Continent since the dreams of the Third Reich were postponed a few years back. Today, as a partial result of the EU we have BMW Rolls-Royce and VW Bentley motor cars that stand atop of the world of motor vehicles and which are the envy of the entire world and the best motor cards ever produced anywhere in the world.
The EU is the largest multi-country economy in the world with nearly $ trillion a year in GDP and Germany has become one of the wealthiest and most prosperous countries in the world. The Fourth Reich is becoming a vibrant reality and nothing could possibly be more wonderful.
If a few folks don’t like the EU, then so what? As Marie Antoinette once said a few years back, “Let them eat cake!”
It should have read “$19 trillion a year” above.
I am not sure the unemployed in the peripheral states would agree with you, having their working livlihoods traded away, so that you can drive a cheap BMW.
BMWs are not cheap at all and their price has nothing to do with the EU but there is a much larger and more transparent market for them within the EU as a direct result of the EU.
Since historians say that Marie Antoinette never really said that, can we write the statement off as propaganda?
I learn that in school. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let_them_eat_cake
Mish,
This commenter, “Adam Price”, was such a nuisance on David Stockman’s site, they had to finally boot him off. Tolerated his endless stream of garbage for months, but they finally pulled the plug on him. If his past behavior is any guide, you have a decision to make. Let him continue to pollute your site or shut him down.
It’s not as if what he says is always absurd. I guess that’s why David gave him so much rope.
That said, much of it is. For example, he argued endlessly on Contra Corner last year that the Chinese accounting of their gold reserves was up to date, that they didn’t, in fact, hold more than their stated 1054 tonnes they’d reported since 2009, and that they didn’t withold information. That was right before they did acknowledged … overnight … a 60% increase in the amount of gold held.
But his opinions aren’t the issue. I was sorry to see his name here, because he monopolizes a site, cluttering it with what’s mostly garbage and if you ever engage him in actual discussion, he won’t answer your questions directly in any kind of straightforward way or respond to what you say in a meaningful way … just keeps repeating the same non-sequiturs, ad nauseum.
So, I get that it puts you in a tough situation. I’m sure you don’t want to censor anyone. And the guy is a nuisance. He submit 50 posts in response to one article.
How does anyone have the time or energy to do that? I don’t know. But I have some theories.
I’m not convinced these submissions are from an actual person. “He” may very well be a real person, but acting as a hired troll to gum up your comment board with an endless stream of chatter. Or these submissions may be generated by some kind of robotic program.
If he is real, one wonders if he’s corresponding from a facility, if you catch my drift.
At any rate, I would suggest you strongly consider cutting off his access. And to your other commenters, I would suggest ignoring him. You’ll get nowhere trying to engage with him in a constructive back and forth. Yeah, I get that his stuff is provocative. But he’s just trying to bait you into what will be a completely meaningless exchange.
I’m convinced “his” intention is to disrupt … to be a nuisance. If so, he’s succeeding.
After the silly little ballot initiative for so-called “Brexit” is blown to shreds, the UK should put another ballot initiative on the ballot to fully join the EUROZONE and dump the archaic and silly little currency they presently have in favor or the Euro.
It should have read “in favor OF the Euro” above.
PROCEDURES AND RULES FOR A COUNTRY FOR WITHDRAWAL FROM THE EU
Withdrawal from the European Union is a right of European Union (EU) member states under the Treaty on European Union (Article 50): “Any Member State may decide to withdraw from the Union in accordance with its own constitutional requirements.”
No state has ever withdrawn from the EU.
No member state has ever held a national referendum on withdrawal from the European Union, though in 1975 the United Kingdom held a national referendum on withdrawal from its predecessor, the EEC; 67.2% of voters chose to remain in the Community. The United Kingdom will hold a referendum on 23 June 2016 to decide whether it should remain a member of the European Union or leave.
The rules and procedures to withdraw are detailed in the full article below.

Davey to be out regardless of outcome of “Brexit” vote…
Cameron’s immediate ouster after EU vote gains momentum
UK Prime Minister David Cameron is likely to step down the day after the upcoming referendum on Britain’s membership in the European Union (EU), a member of the British Parliament says, noting that more MPs are considering to join the Leave campaign.
Even if the Brexit campaign fails to prevail in the June 23 vote, Cameron’s government is not likely to clinch a victory by a margin bigger than 10 percent, the Daily Mirror reported Sunday.
“That would let him leave in a sensible fashion rather than the bloody mess that it could be,” a backbench MP was quoted as saying by the daily.
According to the report, at least 25 Tory MPs are totally committed to the Leave campaign and can give Cameron a hard time in the build-up to the vote. The number is expected to rise as the voting nears.

Even if they vote to leave it won’t be allowed. Remember the song hotel California? You can check out any time ubwant but u can’t even leave. Same with EU they can’t let them leave
The rules of the EU as stated above clearly allow any state within the EU to exit the EU and any state that chooses to do so certainly can leave whether that is an advisable decision or not.
Adam Price must be paid supporter of EU. Otherwise his enthusiasm is hard to understand.
Electorate are the people of UK, not anyone else. If this is ignored it is obvious we live in tyranny.
Nope, just a citizen of the People’s Republic of California where many of us highly admire the EU and wonderful things it has done to unify Europe where so many of us love to travel and shop and have fun! The EU is the best thing that has ever happened to Europe and has brought great joy, prosperity, peace, currency stability, and happiness to nearly all of the 504 million residents of the EU.
“The EU is the best thing that has ever happened to Europe”
And so says someone NOT living in Europe or being European. Nice. I’ll take that you had nice vacation, few drinks and sun was shining up from your behind. As an European I have VERY different views about things going on.
Mish might consider limiting your rants to 3-5 per discussion.
@ Samjir
As you state.
For the multiple posts , at first I figured suggesting why he does not condense them into one or two if he is into a topic , I don’t mind anyone’s enthusiasm as long as I can skip it if I choose to . To scroll to comments and have to work through strings of posts by the same person before getting to those of others is off putting . Mish or comment supervisor know this …
What a coincidence
Feedlot inmates have a similar lack of interest in maintaining their membership.
Europeans were dubious, but accepting of the EU goals prior to Merkel’s open borders to “helpless” MENA migrants. Who wouldn’t like the idea of moving freely between the sovereign countries within the union? The devil in the fine details were never seen by most people, of course. But, when the invasion that it truly is, was fully realized by the general population of the European countries, I think that’s when it turned super sour to the people. Too little critical thinking by the citizens means too late to save their economies now. And now they get to play host millions of unassimilating and angry people to boot.
Just like those unwanted guests, the people in governing control allowing this to happen won’t be moved out of power easily. Kinda reminds me of the ticks my dog used to get covered in back before they made excellent tick repellent(1980’s). The only way I could kill the buggers was to pluck them out, and light them on fire.
Heaven help the EU if the general population ever decides to get their kerosene cocktails and pitchforks.

The benefits of the EU to nearly all of the 504 million citizens in the EU have been absolutely enormous.

27% of the people in GREECE have a FAVORABLE opinion of the EU?
You would think that number would be more like 2.7%.
Maybe those people work for the government so they MUST support the official madness…
The 27% is probably the amount of people with money still blocked in their accounts by capital controls. Once they have their cash withdrawn they will be free to say as they feel.
Everyone hates their government until they find out that their free crap is going to dry up. Greece is more dependent on this than most, so it will have to get pretty bad for them to wean off.
Most likely, the same 27% of the population that control 97% of the country’s wealth and power. Realizing they need outside help, to keep feeding off of their countrymen.
Greece would be a totally destroyed insolvent financial wreckage right now without the ENORMOUS GENEROSITY OF THE EU and all of the banks in Greece would have totally failed without the direct financial support of the ECB as part of the EU and EZ (EuroZone). Hellllooooooooo?
France is a hellhole: 15% of the population lives under the poverty line, farmers have been decimated by Russian sanctions and are committing suicide right and left, you can see women in hijabs dumpster diving at all times of day while people who have a job raid their local supermarket dumpsters at night, bank lobbies with ATMs become homeless shelters after business hoiurs…. I could go on forever but the fact that 38% of the population still has a favorable opinion of the EU just goes to show how truly retarded the french populace is… 🙂
France will implode, it has no God.
I dont think the French were big fans of that Scottish gambler dude who thought hyperinflation was the answer.
And no it wasnt the whiny Banker complaining about that scheme either but if I recall correctly the French State in its entirety.
They were so not fans of his that they copied the idea on and off ever since, not the first or last country to either.
Naw The 38% just shows how many are working for or otherwise scamming the EU .
Like Madoff investors they bought the pitch “We rip-off the other guy and pass the savings on to you. “
False. The French Riviera is more glorious and prosperous and beautiful than ever this Spring. Friends just got back last week from a lovely vacation there where it couldn’t have possibly been nicer or more wonderful along with the superb shopping in Paris. When was the last time you went to France?
To STOP the NEW WORLD ORDER GANG, the EU has to come apart and we have to stop the destruction of the USA and it has to be done NOW! TRIUMPH with TRUMP!
Once upon a time Euro nations were banding ever closer together for protection from invasion by the Warsaw Pact. That is no longer a likely scenario, so their motivation is less.
Now the EU is making people feel vulnerable to Syrian refugees, and irresponsible bankers demanding bailouts. The bank bailout has been going on for almost a decade now, and women across Europe fear to go outside.
Brexit is pure fantasy. I’m convinced of that after following the electoral results in Scotland and Austria and the inevitable outcomes of the vote in Greece. But it’s fun to dream and think we control our own lives. The populists lose one vote after another. This must shake the confidence of even the most devout eternal optimist. Cynicism is a sign of age and wisdom. That’s quite obvious by the wide margin of differences in opinion between the young and the old, as noted in the EU surveys. I wouldn’t go back to being 25 years old again, even if I had the opportunity unless I could take my accumulated knowledge with me.
There was a question if the Austrian vote would be contested after the platform logging complaints mysteriously closed just before the deadline. .. sorry for the size of the block quote from eugenics pandemics… one of the few sites ( which I have no opinion of one way or the other) covering this continuously in English :
*POPULIST CONSERVATIVE PARTY DEMANDS RE RUN OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION RUN OFF
*VAST ELECTION FRAUD COST “CLOSED BORDERS” FREEDOM PARTY CANDIDATE THE ELECTION, CLAIMS LEADERSHIP
*VOTER FRAUD PROVEN IN 94 OF 117 ELECTORAL DISTRICTS IN AUSTRIA
*NEARLY 600,000 POSTAL VOTES WERE OPENED AHEAD OF SCHEDULE AND WITHOUT CONTROL COMMISSION, OFTEN BY UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS
*POSTAL VOTES IN 82 ELECTION DISTRICTS AFFECTED
*ESPECIALLY MASSIVE VIOLATIONS IN CAPITAL, VIENNA
*DEMAND FOR REFORM OF POSTAL VOTE SYSTEM, CENTRAL VOTER REGISTER
Austria’s populist conservative party has filed a complaint contesting the presidential election vote on 22nd May, which the party lost by a razor thin margin of 31,000 votes.
Violations in counting votes occurred in 80% of the electoral districts in Austria, Freedom Party leader Heinz Christian Strache said at a press conference attended by lawyers.
A total of 573,275 postal votes were opened and sorted into valid and invalid votes before a commission arrived. In some cases, unathorized persons counted the votes.
In every district in Vienna, votes were opened before the time allowed by the law and an uncontrolled selection of votes was made.
Strache also noted teenagers under the legal voting age of 16 were allowed to vote.
In addition, the Ministry of Interior published “test” data predicting the result one day before.
The Constitutional Court will take four weeks to reach a decision whether to order a recount of some district votes or a re run of the entire election.
The basis of the 150 page complaint submitted by the populist conservative party are irregularities in postal votes in the run off between Freedom Party candidate Norbert Hofer and Green Party leader Alexander van der Bellen, reports Die Presse.
Austria has played a key role in closing north Europe’s borders to an unprecedented influx of migrants.
Populist Freedom Party candidate Nobert Hofer campaigned on a platform of reducing migrant flows and holding a referendum on the TTIP, but was defeated as a result of postal votes by establishment “open borders” candidate van der Bellen.
The massive election fraud was uncovered by the general public, and not by the authorities.
There is no actual evidence whatsoever to support any of your assertions regarding voting in Austria.
Find someone else to insult .

The people of the UK will totally chicken out on exiting the EU when they go to the polls and will simply choose to remain in the EU just as the people of Scotland chose to remain within the UK. Any other choice would leave the UK shivering out in the cold and isolated from the EU economy which is the largest multi-country economy in the world with over 504 million people benefiting enormously from it including the people in the UK. The only pros to exiting would be that the UK would not have to shoulder further costs of the EU, but that would come at a very steep price to the economy of the UK, including its vibrant financial economy which would be highly marginalized by an exit from the EU.
What really should be on the ballot in the UK is a second choice allowing voters to DUMP THE POUND IN FAVOR OF THE EURO to make the UK a more vibrant and important member of the UK with a common currency that is second only to the US dollar as the most important currency in the world.
