Voters in Hungary go to the polls on Sunday to vote on a simple question “Do you want the European Union to be able to order the mandatory settlement of non-Hungarian citizens in Hungary without parliament’s consent?”
“No” is virtually certain. The only question is whether or not there is 50% turnout to make the referendum legally binding.
Bloomberg reports Hungarians Vote on Refugees as Orban Seeks Leverage in Europe.
The following image is about all you need to know.
On September 19, Merkel stated she would turn back the clock on refugee policy in one of the most disingenuous statements she has ever made. Pay close attention.
“If I could, I would rewind time by many, many years so that I could better prepare myself and the whole government and all those in positions of responsibility for the situation that caught us unprepared in the late summer of 2015,” Ms Merkel said.
She did not want to undo her idiotic welcome of refugees. Rather she wanted to go back many additional years to prepare for it.
Even if she was brilliant enough to be prepared, the other countries on the route would not have been. And of course Germany could never have prepared in the first place.
Why?
Because there is an endless demand for free handouts. Had Germany prepared for 1 million refugees, 5 million would have arrived.
Slap Merkel
Tomorrow, Hungarian citizens have the chance to slap Merkel in the face. If that happens, it will be well deserved.
Note: This is not an endorsement of Orban or all of his policies. It is an endorsement of the rights of countries to have secure borders.
The EU can have all the nannycrat rules it wants, but when push comes to shove, it is powerless to do anything about Hungary’s decision.
Mike “Mish” Shedlock
Schengen Agreement dissolves before Belgium’s eyes. The we can finally see light at the end of the EU tunnel,,, wait, That’s not light, it’s a train.
Just wait for the civility displayed in the Brexit ‘negotiations’.
My understanding is that the Hungarians are a scrappy, proud and independent lot of people. If this refugee vote doesn’t motivate them to storm the polls and vote to maintain their own nation’s sovereignty – nothing will.
Hungarians don’t strike me as dyed in the wool liberals who think they can save the world. They’ve been through their share of hardships.
I don’t think a 50% turnout will be the obstacle.
I think the obstacle will be holding a clean election.

The whole premise of the EU is open borders between EU countries. That is what they signed on for when the union was formed. Now when people are running around the EU illegally, they want to stop it. If Germany grants the refugees status then they have every right to move to Hungary. Never saw that coming did they. Now it’s too late short of leaving the EU. The nannycrats are not powerless, they will exert financial pressure to get their way. People don’t matter anymore. Go vote if it makes you feel better. It won’t make any difference. The only vote that matters is an exit vote similar to Britain.
Yes, ‘open borders’ for EU citizens not millions of degenerate muzzies.
Depends on what the object for having borders is.
If the objective is :
A.) to restrict access to jobs (especially tech jobs) from foreign labor sources, then having borders is bad. Always remember, borders are bad when Joe Sixpack prospers from them. (See Mexico, India, Vietnam, etc.)
B.) to restrict access to corporate cash hoards, (especially tech cash hoards) from foreign taxing authorities, then borders are good. Always remember, borders are good when the corporate insider prospers from them. (See Ireland, various EU component states)
In summation,
Strong borders = necessary to insulate corporate cash piles from tax authorities.
Weak borders = necessary to insulate corporate payrolls from labor price discovery.
Hungary made sure her MSM is not controlled by the globalist cabal, and earned the wrath of Brussels. What probably made an impression is how the hordes of migrants thrashed everything in their path as they demanded passage to Germany.
Population cohesion is the main, the only fallback you can rely on when disaster strikes.

ALERT WARNING TO ALL IN EUROPE . DO NOT DELAY IF YOU HAVE ANY MONEY IN Deutsche Bank GET IT OUT NOW. OR LOOSE IT ALL IN A FEW MONTHS
It would seem that when the european countries signed on to the EU, they thought “open borders” meant between european EU countries. I doubt that many of them expected the hoards of refugees and others from less advantaged countries swarming over their borders from non-EU countries.
I agree with your analysis, CJ.
I view the EU accord sort like free movement between the states of our union. An Arizonan can freely travel, live or work in New Mexico or even Texas if he or she so desired. That’s not considered open borders. It’s open interstate travel.
The EU accord said that a German could freely travel into France and even live or work there if he or she so desired without much bureaucratic hassle. So the EU nation’s citizens have much of the same freedoms that we have from state to state.
But the EU accord never implied that millions of indigent illiterates from 3rd world hellholes would be invited to join the EU family and move from nation to nation. That was never part of the deal – implicitly or explicitly.
Therein lies the problem.
The EU citizens caught in this quagmire have every right to be outraged.
That’s a very good comparison of the problem OldTimer, the EU and US seem to have the same problem: EU leaders and US leaders (the current administration) inviting UNvetted hoards that will destroy cultures and economies, increase government debts and promote social unrest. And, the terrorists among them. Allowing some refugees fleeing war & terrorism is one thing, allowing hoards of the UNvetted is nuts.
While I do not want to sound like a tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist, it is a fact that socialist/communist/fascist groups have always used cultural pandemonium as a useful means to achieve their goals. Maybe that should be taken into consideration as a reason for these seemingly crazy policies that result in social mayhem and cultural destruction.
I have no idea how any rational person could possibly consider your statement a black helicopter conspiratorial tinfoil hat claim, CJ.
How would inviting millions of unvetted indigent illiterates from a completely different culture of social habits, mores, laws and religious beliefs add stability to the host nation(s)?
Such a practice would only invite tremendous chaos.
Take America for example. In my state a third of the prison beds are occupied by illegal foreigners. Does that add stability to America?
In 2010, according to the US Treasury Department Inspector General, illegal foreigners living in America received $4.2 BILLION dollars in Child Tax Credits with ITIN numbers. 60 minutes did a story on it. Some of the children were living in Mexico. How does that add stability to our country?
In my state the laws that are supposed to fine and jail contractors who hire illegal foreigners are not being enforced. This forces good contractors who would normally obey the laws to join the criminals and hire cheap illegal workers for their businesses to maintain a price competitive operation. Otherwise their businesses would go under and they would lose an income to support their families. How does that add stability to our country?
The illegals don’t just come to America to pick strawberries. They steal manufacturing, hospitality, construction and driving jobs (in some states illegals are entitled to drivers licenses) from citizens workers. How does that add stability to our country?
When I was a kid I used to mow the neighbors lawns in the summer to make some spending money. It taught me that work is rewarded. It taught me self-sufficiency. It instilled a work ethic in me. But today NONE of the kids in my neighborhood mow lawns. THE ILLEGALS STOLE THOSE JOBS TOO!!!
So, no. You are not a conspiracist, CJ.
You are a realist.
Yes, let the voters decide. The rest of Europe should follow Hungary’s example. Democracy.
Democracy is fine up to a point. At a certain point, might doesn’t make right, and, at that point, as Neil Young says, the numbers add up to nothing. Hungary too frequently has been crossing the line, from majority rule to collectivist rights violations. The Hungarian voters have been surrendering their freedom pathetically. I do not envy them one bit. Bad electoral choices. Soon, maybe, no electoral choices.

I am Hungarian and I am NOT going to vote on this senseless referendum today. Here are my reasons why:
1. An unelected, supra-national body cannot compel a sovereign state to grant residency to foreigners. If it could, sovereignty would lose meaning.
2. The refugees do not want to settle in Hungary. When they passed through here, they set off on foot to the west because they couldn’t get on the trains.
3. As the chart shows, the Orbán government has gained significant political capital when they ordered the fence built along the southern border. The referendum is about piling on some more political capital so that Fidesz could claim they have been given a mandate. After all, who in their right mind is going to vote “Yes”?

O/T Just read Article 50 by March ’17.
Mish is wrong here. The refugee crisis was created by NATO whose policies are mainly responsible for the Syrian civil war. They wanted Assad gone because he opposed the Qatar gas pipe to go through Syria. Hungary is a member of NATO therefore they have direct responsibility for the situation and should accept refugees.
All refugees should be settled between NATO member countries and then maybe next time they think before they decide to tear a country apart for purely economic reasons.
Marting,
Good point. How many Syrians do you volunteer to feed and clothe in your household?
“It is an endorsement of the rights of countries to have secure borders.”
Depends on what the objective is :
1.) To restrict access of foreign labor seeking jobs, especially tech labor?
Borders are unnecessary! They are draconian!
2.) To restrict access of foreign tax authorities seeking stashed cash hoards, especially tech company cash hoards?
Borders are necessary! They are essential to modern business planning!

“If I could, I would rewind time by many, many years so that I could better prepare myself and the whole government and all those in positions of responsibility for the situation that caught us unprepared in the late summer of 2015,” Ms Merkel said.
There was nothing to prepare for. It should not have happened in the first place. If there was no meddling in the Middle East, there would have been no refugee crisis. There would have been no jetliners flown into the World Trade Center.
Exactly! Yet no one has said that in the MSM
Wall Street open should be interesting now that the DB reduced settlement report Friday appears to have been a ruse.
“Note: This is not an endorsement of Orban or all of his policies. It is an endorsement of the rights of countries to have secure borders.”
The GLOBALISTS don’t want any borders. They do, however want a global government. If we shouldn’t need borders, we shouldn’t need government, either. No cities, no counties, no states, no countries. All have borders. Erase New York City, Los Angles county, the state of Illinois from the map. Take down all the signs. Everyone will have a GPS device to be able to determine where they are on the Earth.
No more vacations to Florida, just GPS coordinates xxyy.
“If we shouldn’t need borders, we shouldn’t need government, either. ”
Private property ceases to exist, or at least be recognized as such, once government is gone. No borders means no property line around your home.
What’s for dinner tonight? I’m staying at “your” place, I like how it looks. Great curb appeal.
This what the globalist megalomaniacs have in mind. One world “government” which really means no real government. At least not any recognizable, representative government. Just masters of the universe, directing all human activity through the central planning politburo.
“but when push comes to shove, it is powerless to do anything about Hungary’s decision.”
Isn’t the Euro Army ready yet then? As soon as it is, the tanks will roll into Hungary to teach these upstarts a lesson…
A few points.
A) German invitation was unilateral to compensate for their awful demographics.
B) Now other countries to be forced to take quotas without having been involved in the unilateral decision and many having to cope with the mass migration through their territories, uninvited.
C) Failure to comply will have financial repercussions as EU fund transfers can be witheld, money is from Germany to EU to eastern Europe.
Who runs Europe, Germany.
It’s an awful situation for genuine refugees seeking a life chance in peace. There are many that can make trustworthy citizens but how to know who is who? Single men of military age tend to pose the biggest threat.
Joined up thinking could equipment them to return to defend their own place or help development closer to home.
In a few years there will be uproar when all there is in the some areas is a desert void of humans. Nature abhors a vacuum and it will be filled with more extremists simplybso Germany needn’t worry about its demographic cliff.
The EU is complicit as a fall in German GDP through demographics will destroy the project so they line up, do as they are told and work on other states in the EU as a German proxy.
