The EU’s refugee deal with Turkey is about to unravel. All it takes to kill the deal is one nation, but several states now grasp the notion the deal was a huge mistake.
Erdogan’s Blackmail threats, the death penalty, a press takeover, a judicial purge, and Erdogan’s jailing of political opponents finally tipped the scale for Austria, Luxembourg, and the EU enlargement commissioner.
Please consider Erdogan Threatens to ‘Open the Gates’ for Refugees in EU Dispute.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey threatened to “open the gates” to Europe for millions of Syrian refugees as he lashed out at Brussels over growing criticism of his crackdown on opponents.
Mr Erdogan made the comments shortly before the European Commission castigated his administration on Wednesday for purging more than 100,000 soldiers, judges, civil servants and teachers from their posts since a failed coup in July. The war of words comes amid pressure from some EU countries to suspend talks with Ankara over Turkish membership.
Publishing a report into the state of Turkey’s long-stalled EU accession bid, Johannes Hahn, the EU enlargement commissioner, said Brussels was gravely concerned by the “degradation in the rule of law and democracy” since the attempted putsch.
But Mr Erdogan suggested to a group of Turkish business leaders that European leaders were afraid to halt the country’s accession talks because that could lead to a fresh influx of migrants.
“They say unabashedly and shamelessly that the EU should review its negotiations with Turkey. You are late, go and review them as soon as you can. But don’t just review them — go and make your final decision,” Mr Erdogan said.
“You know those 3m refugees in Turkey? They say there is a problem.” he added.
“What if the negotiations end and they open the gates, where would we put those 3m refugees? That is their worry. That is why they cannot come to the end point.”
But Turkey has accepted no more than a few hundred refugees as talks stalled over Mr Erdogan’s refusal to bring antiterrorism laws closer to European standards. An October deadline he set for the introduction of visa-free travel expired without a breakthrough.
Fresh tension between the EU and Mr Erdogan comes as accession talks are also threatened by the Turkish leader’s proposal to restore the death penalty, which was removed from Turkish law more than a decade ago to support its application for EU membership.
Brussels officials say a restoration of the death penalty would halt accession talks, although Mr Hahn said any decision on whether Turkey should remain an EU candidate country was for member states to make.
Most want to keep the talks going, but Austria has pushed for talks to be suspended while Luxembourg’s foreign minister has called for sanctions against Turkey, saying the purge evokes memories of the Nazi era.
Blackmail Rule Number One
Don’t make deals with blackmailers.
There is no rule number two. That’s all you need to know.
Angela Merkel knew full well she was dealing with a blackmailer, but she made a deal anyway, without consultation, for political expediency.
I rather doubt she survives this mess.

Something HUGE is about to be unleashed !!
I’m not just referring to third world weapons of mass destruction… I am referring to the HUGE White European backlash that is building up like a pressure cooker. All European governments have turned the heat up high by welcoming in swarms of destroying third worlders. At the same time they are suppressing the natural backlash from their ethnic White populations. That seething giant White pressure cooker is ready to explode into ethnic nationalism !!
.
I think it is ironic that The EU which doesn’t even respect their own members sovereignty and helped cause the carnage in the Middle East is telling Turkey how to govern. Just look what they have done to the people of Greece and Ukraine. The nazis are in Brussels. Talk of calling the kettle black!
There is a form of supra national socialism in the EU structure and it stinks.
Resistance is futile. A creeping, blood sucking, controlling phantom determined to destroy anything people can identify with (nation, race, religion) except ‘a certain idea of Europe’.
Hypocrisy abounds.
If Erdogan allowed the refugees the right of free passage through Turkey into the EU, he would be embracing EU values. So, I say to Turkey: Give the refugees free and unrestricted passage out of Turkey into the EU. Then kickback and watch as the EU begins to sound like Trump calling for a wall.
The only problem I see here is where to put all the port-o-potties and how many will be needed?
PS: read my comment below and you will see how I marvel at the capacity of government to screw things up, then screw things up even more trying to fix them. Europe did this to themselves. Pretty soon it will become EU law that each EU resident must take in a refugee family and put them in a spare room.
From my real experience, which is not representative but indicative, it is much worse. They will turn their own citizens into refugees, deny them basic rights, and persecute them. It was all so nice in Europe as they promised everyone everything, and then they had to face reality and start allocating their promises, that means arbitrage, that means someone has to pay… everyone has to pay. Those who did not participate in the fest are the first to be targeted, those who were not able to ( whether migrant or youth) are given a premium. So the mill turns, year after year, as the population gets processed and then spat out. The sheep are herded, huddled they power the wheel, replaced by those more pliable, as time goes by. The population is expendable, its only purpose is to concede the wanted recognition, to praise the presented illusions.
Or that.
Yes, the “machine” (credit-based monetary system) needs a new generation of debt slaves.
They may be from 3rd world hell-holes, but they have “clean balance sheets”
I think you figured it out. Clean personal balance sheets are a plunderable resource. A fixed residence and some form of regular income and demand based inflation can be manufactured. Perhaps Mr Draghi will encourage DB and the Italian banks to accept some new customers. The ECB can provide funds via purchases of new Immigrant oriented sovereigns. The proceeds go to lending banks, who make loans to Syrian immigrants.
Rule of 78s interest income recognition for fixed purchases and socialized support for loan loss reserves will save Europe and provide needed inflation for all. The Syrians will be grateful and shower bankers wit rose petals. Everyday EU residents will finally get to see rising prices. Yay. This is how to turn lemons into lemonade.
As for debt slaves. Credit card rates in Brazil hit 475%. Never ceases to amaze me what can be done to someone when you mix ignorance with desire. On second thought, I think I just described why I got married.
Wrldtrst – an interesting article :
“As credit cards offer the option of minimum payment (that varies from 5% to 15% of the total value, according to the credit card company) it is very easy to lose control and limit your payment to the minimum amount. At some point, with interest rates of at least 15% a month and up to 463,30% a year, it is impossible to pay the bill, even the minimum amount”

LMAO, yes they do!
Thems balance sheets be clean!
If the EU wants to run Turkey’s internal affairs, then they should invade Turkey and install a puppet government. Or maybe that was what the failed coup was about. I mean, the EU is a real joke, and cannot get their own house in order.
This Nazi hallucination in Austria is just that, delusions of elites, what motivated Brexit. Policies made in reaction to internal mental delusions, reason Hungary and the others who still think sanely should get out before an EU Army blocks exit permanently. The EU is Hillary on Steroids.
.
” Nazi hallucination in Austria ”
Keep the heat up high and in time it will explode all over Europe.
Hitler will seem tame in comparison.
.
Sadly yes.
We can do this the hard way now, or the really hard way later, or the really really hard way later, or the really really really hard way later, or….
You get the picture.
People just want to pretend and hope.
My simplistic understanding of how this problem first started is:
Europe got frightened about gas shipments from Russia
Europe noticed gas was available south of Syria
Europe asked Assad to build a pipeline for the gas so Europe had another source
Assad said No
Assad becomes a liability and an easy ouster was foreseen by idiots who plan such things
Endless war followed, re-branded as a civil war and a way against terrorists. The US was said to hire former terrorists who want the US gone as ‘moderate rebels’.
Assad still there and Syria in ruins
Russia marketed by allies into the evil empire to fill the needs of the script
EU now wants Turkey to help them bail themselves out of a problem they created. Erdogan is a bit touchy on the whole idea.
Another Obama foreign policy triumph. Add it to Libya and Obamacare domestically. This will make a good drunken bar debate – who was the worse President: Obama or GWB?
“This will make a good drunken bar debate – who was the worse President: Obama or GWB?”
I’m no fan of O, but that’s easy. GWB. GWB got us heavily militarily involved in the Iraq and Afghanistan fiascoes and got the whole Middle East quagmire rolling. BTW, although you’ll never hear it in our useless MSM, civilian casualties in Afghanistan have hit a record high this year and a large percentage of Afghani “military” forces are ghosts who collect pay but don’t show up. I mean, gosh, what can you expect for a trillion bucks, right?
~ and the second debate would be: Who was the worst Secretary of State?
.
Erdogan is actually doing White Christian Europe a favor… that is… IF he is successful in exploding the giant White pressure cooker.
Europe is dying a slow racial, moral and spiritual death. But with the heat turned up high, White Europeans will be agitated, forced from their complacency and moved to action. Once the giant White pressure cooker explodes into ethnic nationalism, White Europeans will take control of their nations and their destiny… expel the third world horde and hang the traitors.
.
No successful revolution I am aware of, was ever conducted by the residents of an old folks home.
It’s not a revolution. It an Invasion!
Assad is a crafty devil hell bent on taking over Europe. Russia and Putin are in on it. How?
“The mouse that roared” strategy, applied sideways. Provoke some idiots into declaring a war. Create massive destruction in your country and open the boarders so refugees can escape into the helpful arms of liberals who have brains the size of walnuts. Allow massive numbers to migrate. Crowd out the original residents of the liberal homeland after enough refugees make it over. You now have a new country of your own.
.
I can’t imagine why Putin [or anyone else] would want to rule a third world Europe. But maybe he will clean house after he takes control.
.
Europeans don’t want hate filled immigrants terrorizing them. The vetting process is nonsensical. If Angie wants to help poor Mid Easterners, she should stop bankers from printing inflation that the poor can’t afford. Then they can stay home, where they want to be in the first place.
The problem is, geriatric Europeans wants immigrants changing their diapers. While living happily in relative squalor, chanting kumbaya to their “kind hearted” native overlords, and not being uppity.
The Japanese were right in betting on Asimo over immigrants to do those jobs, although the complexity of execution of that plan, does seem to require more patience than even the famously healthy Japanese have time for.
Europe should take everything west of the Bosphorus. A logical and natural border for people that have a history spanning millenniums of not being able to get along.
And yes I know geographically how ridiculous that comment sounds. Almost as ridiculous as when I was in Switzerland talking to Swiss friends about them not being part of Europe.
“take” with what? 80 year olds in wheelchairs banned from owning even a toy pistol?
These Russian paratroopers appear ready for the mission.

Russia, the Third Rome, was the Second Rome, Christian Constantinople’s heir.
How would they do that? I assume the helmet of the average EU soldier has a propeller on top, per EU directive. It is needed to promote proper ventilation and meet style requirements. Me … I see this as a problem. The EU … they would probably fine me for thinking this about their fine propeller topped helmets if I lived there.
“Erdogan’s Blackmail threats, the death penalty, a press takeover, a judicial purge, and Erdogan’s jailing of political opponents finally tipped the scale..
Sounds like a democrat.
Pretty easy to stop. Sink the ships, build a few walls…..Put the pathetic EU won’t do that….
They will do anything just as long as they are somehow portrayed as the saviours.
There is a second rule, Mish. Don’t ever close a deal with a con man. Reading the idiotic comments on here, I finally understand how Trump got elected.
Understanding how Trump got elected is simple: Crooked Hillary got slapped down.
As I am reading this blog & comments I keep thinking of the old adage:
“Good fences make good neighbors”. Reverse that and you have the problem identified.
Try this… I have a border that I cannot fence because a neighbour has placed his fence well inside the border, he sold it to another who not only refused to respect the boundary, but became hostile when I told him it was not in the right place, AND moved it still further to his favour!
The neighbour on the opposite side put up his fence, agreed where the boundary was for me to place a fence, and then physically attacked me for trying to put up a small fence there ( half the height of his, my side of his) for no known reason !
A third neighbour moved his border a few tens of feet in, made sorts of excuses that he would return it, then later said I would have to oblige him to!
The fourth neighbour is a track, the town hall widened the track leaving a verticle face of earth our side that would subside, but instead of suing them I do the good thing and build a low ( two foot) support wall. They tell me I have to break it down or they will fine me for not having permission, that if I don’t pay they will claim the property, so I take them to court, the town hall send a messenger round who reads to me from a letter that the procedure to demolish the wall has been dropped. I withdraw my legal process, later go to the townhall to notify the wall is finished, and they tell me the process is still underway. I take them back to court.
Nuts.
Off Topic: This comment belongs n your previous post so I hope u won’t fuss at me for putting it here. Ok the list of all the doables is a great start but it doesn’t deal with the QE debt monster. As these securities mature they r just rolled over instead of letting them expire which would reduce liquidity and blow the dollar up. But until this debt is totally defaulted upon we’ll never have any really good economic growth. I am a saver and I want to buy a 1 year treasury bill with a 5 percent yield. That won’t happen until the trillions of dollars of debt is wiped out all over the world needed to cleanse the financial system for this to happen.Mish I’m not telling u something u don’t already know.
It is already too late to cut any deal with Erdogan. Merkel is a fool for not seeing this as is the rest of NATO.
Erdogan has already made a deal with Putin. All NATO assets should be removed from Turkey ASAP. We have not kicked Turkey out of NATO as effectively Erdogan already has removed NATO from Turkey. It is in the interest of the U.S. and Putin for us to remove the nukes ASAP. We both do not want these to fall into the wrong hands.
Erdogan has already made a deal with ISIS.
In this region of the Middle East we need to deal with Putin first, Assad second, and Iran third. Our only friends are the Kurds.
We do not need another war and cutting a deal with Putin should be job 1. Talking or listening to Erdogan is a waste of time.
Would those be the gates of hell?
Turkey and the EU are trying to use membership as a means to control the other.
The groupthink of Western governments is a wonder to behold. To whom was this outcome not patently obvious.
Blackmail implies slander, not some other tort.
This is extortion.
Nice country you have there, pity if it was flooded with a bunch of arsonists…
Thanks for that correction on blackmail vs extortion
