Earlier today Donald Trump barred visa-holders from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from entering the US.
The airlines were caught off guard and now Rush to Comply With Surprise Travel Restrictions
Global airlines are struggling to comply with new travel restrictions after being caught flat-footed by President Donald Trump’s executive order blocking visitors from seven predominantly Muslim nations.
U.S. carriers didn’t get advance notice of the travel ban or briefings from government officials on how it should be implemented, people familiar with the matter said.
The order was causing chaos at airports in the U.S. and abroad as border agents blocked travelers from entering the country and airlines barred visa-holders from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, as well as people from those countries who are lawful U.S. residents, from getting on planes to the country.
Lawyers “are trying to makes sense of what happened,” said Christine Alden, an immigration attorney in Miami. “It’s all really far-reaching. It’s going to affect businesses, families and students going back to school,” she said.
The U.S. has treaties with some of the targeted counties that allow investors to visit the U.S. under the E-2 visa program, she said. Those people won’t be allowed to come run their businesses. Oil companies, tech companies and other business that depend on foreign workers may see them stranded overseas.
Trapped Overseas
Legal residents holding the wrong passport who happen to be outside the US are stranded. This includes students, business executives, and even US business owners.
The Hill notes Immigration Ban Includes Green Card Holders.
President Trump’s executive order banning people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. also applies to green card holders from those countries, the Department of Homeland Security said Saturday.
“It will bar green card holders,” acting DHS spokeswoman Gillian Christensen told Reuters.
Green cards serve as proof of an individual’s permanent legal residence in the U.S.
A senior administration official clarified on Saturday afternoon that green card holders from the seven countries affected in the order who are currently outside the U.S. will need a case-by-case waiver to return to the U.S.
Green card holders in the U.S. will have to meet with a consular officer before departing the country, the official said.
You can leave, but you might not make it back is the message of the day.

Breathtaking stupidity of world class dimensions. God help America. This moron will destroy us.
Obama banned travelers from these same countries for 6 months in 2011
Please, vooch, don’t let facts get in the way of liberal bigotry and ignorance!
That’s a lie. The state dept paused processing Iraqi refugees for 6 months in 2011. They also did away with streamlined visa rules for some countries. That’s hardly the same thing as what Trump is doing. That’s why you don’t remember people being stuck in airports, etc.
Phil, you can’t reason with the Trumpsters. They will call you a liberal bigot even if you have been a repub all you life like me. I am very conservative and think Trump has lost his marbles which to a Trumpster means I am a liberal bigot.
I believe his marbles were lost long ago…
They were nice marbles.
Great marbles.
There were many, many great marbles…
Hey, I think I found them. They were lost about a week ago:
A Truck Driver Has Lost His Marbles — All 38,000 Pounds Of Them
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/a-truck-driver-has-lost-his-marbles-all-38000-pounds-of-them_us_5885c9f4e4b0e3a7356a1439
Shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.
Very much an example of the kinds of chaos trump brings, and entirely predictable.
I mentioned so well before the election in this comments section.
I do remember Cubans stuck in Mexico enroute to the US just a few weeks ago. Mexico sent them back to Cuba. I bet the Cuban government gave them a welcome home party. What do you think?
“The state dept paused processing”: it’s remarkable what a change in verb can achieve in politics.
Green card holders may be denied entry at the border. Most of them know that when they leave the U.S.. Here is an article from Nolo –
http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/us-deny-entry-inadmissibility-reasons-29715.html
“Even a permanent resident (green card holder) isn’t safe from being found inadmissible. If a permanent resident departs the U.S., it’s possible for him or her to be found inadmissible upon return. This situation might arise, for example, if the person had been gone from the U.S. for too long, had committed a crime, had developed tuberculosis, or had begun receiving public assistance since receiving the green card.
If you hold a green card, one way to avoid this problem is to apply for U.S. citizenship as soon as you’re eligible.”
It is 5 years waiting time.
What’s the big deal? It’s not their country. It’s the American citizen’s country. All others need to start being extremely polite.
Thats OK as long as you don’t want to travel. At the moment Trump is targeting Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Sudan and Somalia (only Iran has retaliated to date) but that is not where most of the worlds 1.7 billion Muslims live.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_by_country
Have a reality check – even Europe has 24 million, and China has many, with Indonesia the biggest Muslim country.
ummm…wonder why he excluded citizens of Saudi Arabia, which committed the worst terrorist attack in the history of the world and one on US soil. Of all politicians he is the biggest hypocrite of all. Anyone who thought he will distance himself from the establishment is a fool. If Obama was pro-establishment puppet (and he was) this guy is the same with a ton of political idiocy added. Where America is going is anyone’s guess now. This is like giving a 7-year old to land 777 full of passengers. Good luck everyone.
“Breathtaking stupidity of world class dimensions. God help America. This moron will destroy us.”
What would be your response if one of those people detained, was to have killed 57 people in a terrorist attack a few months from now?
The one you call a moron, would have saved 57 lives.
57 people? What the hell are you talking about? Why not ban people who have green eyes? What if one of those green eyed people was a rapist who would have raped someone in America? What if they would have shoplifted $570.53 from a store in a mall? What if they would have killed 2 people in a lover’s triangle?
The list seems pretty arbitrary. Why not Saudi Arabia or Egypt? Does Trump own golf courses there or something?
Looks like from where there is not full security framework with or in those countries. Alternatively the countries with highest permanent migration figures. Alternatively countries which NGO and national legislature are all mixed up in.
Egypt has strong security screening on the issuing of passports and exit documents. President Sisi has banned the fanatics from travelling and has imprisoned many troublemakers. Also Egypt has about 15 million Christians (mostly Coptic).
This is the next step in the complete Republican flip-flop- first they fell in love with Russia, next they start defending Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Hilarious how transparent these people are.
What Republican flip flop? The Republican party wants war with Russia. It is Trump that does not.
It’s as though the restrictions were issued without consideration for those that have a legal status for being in the States or for traveling to and from the States. The restrictions could be applied to others without such status. This issuance does not seem to have done with sufficient forethought. It’s going to create a lot of ill-will among those who have been stranded. Trusting that this can be remedied as quickly as it was implemented.
Of course there was little to no consideration of any possible consequences or fallout. What did you expect? As some dweeb talking head Trump supporter on the news this morning said “Trump is a man of action!”. Unfortunately, action w/o forethought is a recipe for unintended consequences.
“Of course there was little to no consideration of any possible consequences or fallout.”
Prove that none of the people detained was a terrorist. You can’t. The consequence to not acting, could have been a terrorist attack.
Moron.
There he goes again, Trump is placing the security of americans ahead of others, how unamerican!
If Trump really cared about our security, Saudi Arabia would have been first on the list.
Exactly. This is just red meat for Trump supporters who are dumb enough to believe this stuff.
If that was the case the the following countries should be on top of that list but they are not: Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Lebanon since those were the nationalities of the 911 terrorist. Add to that list Nigeria: “Boko Haram is not only fighting the cause of Islam in Nigeria, Abubakar Shekau said in a video message, but also against the leaders of the U.S., France and all other countries that do not rule according to the teachings of the Qur’an, the Lagos Guardian daily reported.”. I guess this has nothing to do with that omission:
“Trump Hotel Collection in the Middle East: Ivanka Trump, the business tycoon’s daughter and executive vice president of development & acquisitions for the Trump Organization, told the Hotelier Middle East that the company’s luxury line of hotels, Trump Hotel Collection, plans to build hotels in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Saudi Arabia in an exclusive interview in May.”
Or this:
“ExxonMobil (XOM) has reportedly made a major oil discovery off Nigeria’s shores that could produce a billion barrels, Bloomberg reported Thursday. The news came as the Texas-based titan and Big Oil alike have experienced a significant slump in prices and profits over the last two years.”
So no, it seems that just like his predecessors Trump puts his money (and the interest of the republican conglomerate) interest ahead of the security of Americans.
World heads back towards normal.
Trump just made sure the message was heard loud and clear.
“ainrofilaC letoH eht ot emocleW” You can leave, but you can never check in.
One account I read mentioned two stranded Iraqis who work for U.S. government contractors. At a time when so many American citizens cannot find decent jobs, this was mind boggling to me.
It’s also a shame that Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states were not added to the list since their human rights abuses are manifest and that’s where most of the 9/11 terrorists actually came from.
Kar, good luck trying to make sense of what Trump is doing. 🙂 and yes, last I knew people with green cards are qualified to work legally in the United States so why do you have a problem with those Iraqis working in the United States. Are you saying companies should hire Americans first then hire green card holders?
How easily we forget…
AMERICA 1st
Wait a minute. Isn’t everything Trump says/does automatically great, wonderful and truly American? Bin Laden was sheltered by Pakistan, and they are not on the list? Saudis fund ISIS and they are not on the list? Are all the potential terrorists out there only just from the countries listed? Did anybody actually think this through?
Is there now a right for anyone in the world to enter the USA?
Maybe anyone in the world can come here and vote or apply for an absentee ballot.
You would have preferred Hillary? Oh wait, you are from Chicago, having voted with your feet to be under that rule. You didn’t seem to like Obama very much.
I tried hard to get Ron Paul in 2012. But Trump is what you get when people won’t listen to reason. Most of these are from the socialist blue states (Google, the totally pro-Hillary company is particularly whining). I DON’T CARE. All these socialists were doing destructive things and just assumed business as usual. Fine, let the half-dozen of these non-citizens from red-states back in. But let the Hillary supporting people suffer. I’ve had to suffer under 8 years of Obama and they didn’t care, and aren’t even citizens.
There are plenty of Americans ready to replace them, and I’m happy to help with any GoFundMe to send their friends and family in the USA permanently back to Iraq, Syria, or other terrorist area.
I would suggest that a legal resident does have the right
Mish,
The dual citizen ban will effect a huge number of international managers. I’m guessing 5-10 million people are dual
citizens with one citizenship from one of the banned countries. A lot of them
work in multinationals and do a lot of traveling.
It’s only for 60-90 days until system
figures out process for “extreme” vetting
Wrong, A Legal residence is not the same as a US citizen. One can lose their green card very easily.
This is absolutely correct. If a green card holder leaves the US for a prolong period of time, he/she may not be let in.
Green card holder has to stay in US at least 6 months per year
So you are suggesting suspending and reviewing all residency permits?
I am certain it can be done.
Trump drew the line a certain way, one that displays (only) a reminder of a certain kind of respect.
In this world you reside where your feet touch and at the mercy of all else. In the USA, as in most other countries, it is the government who holds, and safeguards or abuses of , a part of that mercy.
Trump was elected to make sure the mercy was in favour of a majority of voting Americans according to the tenets he was elected by.
That is choice, that is decision, that is power.
No, I’m just stating a Green Card holder is not the same as a US Citizen.
Hard to make out who was replying to who here. What I suggested Tony was to Mish so as he consider that current actions are actually a kind of middle line designed to send a clear message.
Visas/residency could be suspended at choice until review, what we have is associated right of entry suspended. To insist on right of entry due to existing visa is a way to ask for all visas to be suspended…a bit like saying ‘ that is not legal, you have to suspend all visas to legally enact non entry’.
Personally I would not push the technicalities, because government has the higher hand and may feel obliged to enact harsher laws to gain the same effect. On the other hand, if you consider it has meaning to define the details so as to set precedent…maybe there are already precedents and everyone just likes complaining or wants those reviewed.. I am not a judge or lawyer.
I was also a Ron Paul supporter. This refugee crisis can be thought of as another form of blowback. The whole refugee problem has been caused by our meddling is the Middle East. If we would withdraw from the ME, this problem would largely go away over time. The chaos we have caused in the ME is coming home.
Oh boo frickin hoo. So what if some people are inconvenienced. At least it will help long term make it less likely that Americans will be slaughtered by devout muslims. Trump’s been talking about this for months, weeks and days.
Home of the brave, ha. We sure have wasted a lot of money and effort on the war on terror, way past the point of diminishing returns.
Republicans are some of the least brave people in the world these days.
The liberals are having a hay day with this one. Virginia Gov {and Clinton hack} McAuliffe is at Dulles giving interviews, encouraging the protesters & promising to help in any way he can. At some point, a number of states might well reject Trump’s federal authority. Stunts like this make CalExit look more and more likely, especially given how they’re portrayed in the media.
The issue is “border agents blocked travelers from entering the country and airlines barred visa-holders from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen”.
First of all, who of you would invite to dinner an unknown person from one of these countries. Few of you would volunteer to do so. So why should we invite them to our country without knowing anything about them?
Now, because of Trump’s Executive Order, we are suddenly discovering how many people from these countries that export terrorism have been acceptable to the Obama Administration. Does that not give you pause?
Remember that Obama’s confidant, Valarie, was a muslim woman and Hillary’s confidant, Uma, was also a muslim woman. Maybe Mish will tell you 1) What Valarie put in her yearbook when she graduated from college and 2) what Uma means in Arabic.
Before you all complain too much, maybe you should wait a week or two and see what all this Executive Order revels.
First of all, I support Trump’s effort to end illegal immigration into this country. And I have no problem with a blanket ban on the issuance of new visas for residents of the seven banned country. However, I find Trump’s executive order hamfisted and poorly implemented.
Regarding individuals who have previously been issued green cards and visas (such as H1-Bs) our country has already made a commitment to let them in. They have jobs in America and American companies are relying on them. It is pointless not to let people who happened to be visiting their homes back into the country. It is, in fact, the kind of stupidity that will provoke protest and reaction. Very poorly executed and unnecessary in my opinion.
If Trump had just issued a ban on new visas from the listed countries instead of a ban on all entries (including re-entries), there would have been an outcry from the left, but not such a severe reaction. He could have handled this much more effectively.
Regarding immigration in general, my point of view is that our toleration of illegal immigration is singularly ridiculous. But the paths to legal immigration are ridiculously complex. Why couldn’t Trump order the illegal immigrants we know about to be deported, instead of molesting legal immigrants who waited their turn in line? Complete misfire on Trump’s part.
“First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”
-Martin Niemöller
So far a total of 12 stranded iand one was given special permission and a waiver because of his history of helping so much to fight with our troops and his professef loyalty to our country. Despite that, all the major mainstream media of course are focusing on sad stories about the few that have been sent back ianf protest occurring at the airports for them.
************************************* “… we’d better get back because it’ll be dark soon and they mostly come out at night…Mostly… “
The security of the nation comes before all else.
We’ve endured many terrorist attacks on US soil from those who came from those nations.
Once those nations help us keep safe from their citizens then lift the restrictions, which are temporary anyway.
I realized our government caused lots of damage in the ME. I never encouraged that. I vehemently opposed going into Iraq, Libya and Syria. But just because our warmongers did damage over there I’m not going to support the terrorists coming over here and killing Americans.
We finally have a take-charge President who is taking seemingly unpopular action to benefit the common US citizen. Good for him. His policies should be of no surprise to anyone. This is what he promoted on the campaign trail. This is precisely the reason he was elected and the reason I voted for him.
OldTimer, the terrorists are already here. We have the here from prior immigrants and we have them here from our own homegrown. We are a nation of immigrants. What make “you” any better than “them”? You came from somewhere other than here if you look in your past but you believe you are some how better and why is that? Man you must have some IQ or something. Tell us why please?
Yes we did damage in other countries where we didn’t belong and yes they won’t forget.
I was born on US soil. My parents were born on US soil. And my grandparents were screened and cleared through Ellis Island. All my bloodline came to America the legal way, Leslee. What a concept, eh???
We are a nation of LEGAL immigrants, dear. There’s a big difference between LEGAL and ILLEGAL.
I’m not better. But I’m LEGAL. That’s the difference.
Go try to find a nation with open borders and no immigration laws. Good luck.
If you find it – go live there. You’d be much happier.
Me? I want to live in civilization.
See – I got the story in – and better
There is almost always a second chance
And I think it was a good decision on your part considering your previous time and effort spent to detail the Brexit story. When the Brexit queen visits America to meet with her alter ego it’s big news. Thanks for your effort!
Moron,
“We’ve endured many terrorist attacks on US soil from those who came from those nations.”
Errr no actually Saudi Arabia, Egypt etc. were excluded.
“The security of the nation comes before all else.”
Which is why this fool is unfit for office. This has caused chaos without doing a single thing to increase our security. What excuse is there to get this wrong? If this was a priority of Trump the EO should have been vetted, well crafted and combined with a serious plan to improve security. Instead we essentially caused chaos for random people without actually helping target anyone who is a terrorist or might become one.
The Trump apologists here who front for him are the same ilk who get upset when TSA officials at airports hassle some old grandmother with searches before they get on airplanes but at least there’s some logic to their security system (if only people who ‘look like terrorists’ are targeted then terrorists will simply find someone who doesn’t look like one).
If security comes before all else then it should come before your guy-love for Trump.
Right on, finally a no non-sense approach that doesnt involve creating a committee with countless days and dollars to arbitrate, vasilate and procrastinate on. Make a decision, make it count and sort out the fact from the BS fiction once everyone realizes the USA stands for something more than an open border and open arms. For the people who do business and apply for entrance through proper channels and protocol welcome, to everyone who wishes to scip or jump the Q, change your ways go away. And for those who dont respect or mean ill will to the American lifestyle, your on notice, your not welcome and your most certainly not going to jump the Q on the 100’s of 1000’s who choose to come here honorahly and legally.. Go Trump Go.
Then in next breath, not verified and if news can be trusted, apparently, “U.S. Judge, District Ann Donnelly in Brooklyn after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other groups sued to halt the Jan. 27 order. The order halts efforts to deport refugees and visa holders from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.”. And so it goes … apparently with 1000’s of Immigrants (I for Incoming) of course rallying at the gates.
Where in the ExO does it mandate Immigration Officials to do anything? The ExO is directed to the Director of Homeland Security. The Director would have to issue his own order directing his staff, Immigration Officers, what they are to do based on the ExO. Currently Immigration Officals have the right to deny anybody entry to the U.S.
This case clearly shows, that our new administration is unprofessional, incapable of thinking clearly and does not have a vision. And this will continue showing up again and again and again. This is how I see it …
George – it’s what Trump pledged to do, why he got elected in the first place.
This will be assigned as a national security order and be relegated to federal courts. Justice department will decide. We know which way that will fall.
It is January 29. If students are “going back to school” this late then they are phony students. Classes starts by early to mid January at most real colleges and universities. I would say the destruction of the Twin Towers which then motivated Shrub and the military industrial establishment to drain the federal Treasury fighting ghosts in far off deserts is enough reason to vet all incoming migrants – 16 years too late. Securing borders was the common sense first step for a real common sense government to take. .
The fake media strikes again! Please read the ExO. The left is creating hysteria. Immigration offical have always had the right to deny entry into the US by foreigners. The countries identified by Trump were already designated by Obama as being countries were travel from was to be restricted. We now have a country that is enforcing its laws and every idiot in the msm and the left are shocked.
Yikes, seenitallbefore, thats scary thought.
With all the references here to why the Saudi’s not included on list, one explanation might be they refused all imigration of potential fellow crap disturbing muslims. Rarely hear media speak of that, knowingly maybe not even the Saudis are crazy enough to accept trouble into theyre land. Far better to leave that to the Europeans and North Anericans to feel guilty over and argue about while theyre culture, societies and lifestyle are slowly being shredded. Not that I would advocate it, but Saudi’s also have a reputation for a very fast, efficient means of dealing with wrong doing, where simple theft will quickly cost a hand or two. Collision whereby the victims family member lost can have your head by the agrieved family. What self respecting terrorist can gain any latitude there.
Mish recorded

That includes tourists and I bet the zealous border guards will give all muslims apart from the named countries a hard time since some might just have dual country citizenship and dual passports. This is going to cause angst and payback potential.
If only the lib-tards worked half as hard at protecting US citizens as they do taxing and hurting us, maybe they would have won the election outside San Fran
You have to start somewhere
The probkwm with everyone else…is they were afraid to..
Afraid to lose votes that is…
Trump doesnt give a $hit. He will start doing what needs to be done
Expect this man to be the most effective president for US in 50+ years
You dont have to like him, a lot wont agree, but hes going to get things done
The good people of the USA handed them sanctuary in the USA.
They mistook it for chumps handing them sanctu-convenience.
People will learn.
More like, a bunch of dumbeffs who have been raped, robbed, pillaged and indoctrinated by the Trump class for over a century, have now become so pliant that they are oh-so happy to cheer for their favorite rapist, as long as he promises to use even less lube on one-of-those-guys, than on themselves.
Until Twitter increases their max tweet length, hard limits will remain on the amount of nuance and deliberation one can reasonably expect from White House executive orders.
While we can debate whether he is right or not at least unlike Merkel and other politicians he sure does not appear to be interested in sweeping things under the carpet. IMO, this is typical of running a business since you have to take the bull by its horn and refine your tactics as you go along.
“Until Twitter increases their max tweet length, hard limits will remain on the amount of nuance and deliberation one can reasonably expect from White House executive orders.”
A lot more informative than “we have to pass it to find out what is in it.”
Many large laws require actually seeing implemented to really understand how they will be applied in a large number of different type of cases and circumstances.
This, however, is just pure moron behavior.
Unfit for office. Not even in office a month yet. Pathetic.
Mish’s site has been visited today by:
A lot of unhappy immigration lawyers who fear loss of business.
A lot of unhappy employers who hire foreigners instead of Americans (for cheaper wages).
A lot of unhappy church and charity spokesmen who help these people get into the country, then send the bill to the taxpayers.
This is what Trump was elected for, to clean up the insanity.
Actually immigration lawyers have plenty of business because of this.
Whose happy about this?
Terrorists who are not likely to be deterred or stopped by this silly policy.
Trump delusionalials who think the brouhaha that erupts when Trump does stupid things represents some type of hidden wisdom.
boonton – and delusional people who think the whole world is welcome.
