Zerohedge reports Turkey Says “Migrant Deal Has Ended”, May Unleash Millions of Refugees.
[Deputy Prime Minister Numan] Kurtulmus exclaimed that since “Europe has not kept its promises on the migrant deal, for us that agreement has ended.”
I cannot find verification of that statement but threats were made according to the AP article Turkey Imposes Sanctions on the Netherlands.
10:30 p.m.
Turkey says it is halting all high-level political discussions with the Netherlands in the wake of the Dutch government’s decision to bar two cabinet ministers from campaigning in the country.
Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said during a news conference following a weekly cabinet meeting that Ankara also is closing its air space to Dutch diplomats until the Netherlands meets Turkish requests
He says Turkey’s government plans to advise parliament to withdraw from a Dutch-Turkish friendship group.
Kurtulmus says the political sanctions will apply until the Netherlands takes steps to “redress” its actions.
He said: “There is a crisis and a very deep one. We didn’t create this crisis or bring to this stage.”
8:25 p.m.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says two of his cabinet ministers will apply to the European human rights court over their treatment in the Netherlands.
Erdogan also slammed German Chancellor Angela Merkel for siding with the Netherlands in the dispute over Turkish ministers’ campaign rallies in Europe.
Merkel said Monday that the Netherlands has her “full support and solidarity” after Turkey’s president used Nazi comparisons to criticize Dutch treatment of Turkish ministers.
Erdogan repeated those terms again in the interview, accusing the Netherlands of “Nazism” and “Neo-Nazism.”
5:20 p.m.
Turkey’s minister in charge of European Union affairs says his country should consider reviewing its migration deal with the EU and relax controls on people reaching Europe over land.
Omer Celik’s comments, reported by the state-run Anadolu Agency, came amid tensions with the Netherlands and other European countries over Turkish ministers traveling abroad to court Turkish citizens’ votes in an upcoming referendum.
4:35 p.m.
The surge in tensions from the diplomatic dispute between the Netherlands and Turkey appears to have spread online, with a handful of Dutch websites vandalized with pro-Turkish imagery and slogans.
4:10 p.m.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has welcomed support from Germany’s leader in his country’s diplomatic row with Turkey that boiled over this weekend.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Monday that the Netherlands has her “full support and solidarity” after Turkey’s president used Nazi comparisons to criticize Dutch treatment of Turkish ministers.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the Dutch “Nazi remnants” after a Turkish minister was escorted out of the country less than a day after Turkey’s foreign minister was denied entry. He already had accused Germany of “Nazi practices,” drawing a rebuke last week from Merkel.
1:40 p.m.
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus says the Netherlands will be forced to apologize to Turkey for preventing two ministers from holding campaign rallies.
Kurtulmus said Monday Turkey would give the “necessary response” after the Netherlands escorted the family affairs minister out of the country and denied the foreign minister permission to land. He did not elaborate on the measures Turkey planned.
Kurtulmus told a business meeting in Istanbul that “you will see that in the end, they will come to the point where they will apologize.”
The deputy prime minister described the ministers’ treatment as “footsteps of the far-right, of the neo-fascism and neo-Nazism that has been on the rise in Europe in the past five or six years.”
Netherlands Riots
This morning, Eurointelligence reported “There were riots in Rotterdam after the Netherlands prevented two Turkish ministers from holding a rally with Turks ahead of Turkey’s April 16 constitutional referendum, and deported one of them”
It would hardly be surprising if Turkey did cancel the deal. I had been expecting that for some time. If so, Merkel’s political expediency will have backfired once again.
Erdogan’s Plan All Along?
Merkel’s pact with the devil was guaranteed to fail at some point, why not now?
With a Dutch election on Wednesday, it seems likely Erdogan fomented this dispute now, on purpose. It was a no-lose political scenario for him to shore up his radical support while doing the same for Geert Wilders.

Those posts show exactly who Merkel got into bed with. She cannot admit mistake her now. And given her blatant stubbornness in general, I do not know if she will ever admit a mistake.

It’s kind of like picking a fight with the kid on the other side of town, isn’t it?
Well, it would be, except for the 400,000 Turks in the Netherlands. But I’ll agree that there’s not much risk in this for Erdogan.
Erdogan has reduced himself from a powerful leader figure to SJW in just a week. I don’t think his fan base is going to take that lightly. Perhaps he didn’t get the memo, but the Nazi name doesn’t stick anymore.
Erdogan is going to make mince meat of the Dutch government — so he can extort more $$$ from Merkel while she can still write a big check.
Erdogan might be a brutal dictator or whatever ridiculous label the snowflakes have for him… but he is clearly outsmarting, outwitting and outplaying the EU
It’s not that hard to outsmart suicidal idiots
There must be some other kind of logic than what I am used to having ruining the country’s economy and tourism. Although, admittedly it’s easier to then blame the “outsiders” of all the difficulties and form a religious sh*thole of a country. Good on them!
merkel wants to submit to islam an give them the eu
The March 15th election in The Netherlands will be the first in the new political climate that now is across the European Union.
Note that while we seek evidence of foreign tampering and influence in the past U.S. Election, we see open tampering and influence by many foreign governments in these Dutch Elections.
Are any nation states “sovereign” today?
Is it one legal citizen, one vote or is it one Euro, one vote?
To be sure, Saudi Arabia funded over 20% of Hillary Clinton’s campaign – that’s definite foreign influence.
Its the Russians influencing the election. Just like they made Trump win by lying on poor Hillary.
As a bit of an aside, and perhaps already known by some, found out that the Armenian Genocide is based on religion, as Armenia is the earliest Christian nation. About the same time, Turkey cleansed a good chunk of their Christian population to other lands, Greeks included.
Wonder if Turkey is still mad that their Ottoman Empire was eliminated by Europe?
Undoubtedly.
When the Ottoman Empire was carved up by the West, grouping opposing religious groups into “countries” was clearly meant to keep those countries in a perpetual state of civil war or controllable dictatordship.
“Merkel’s pact with the devil was guaranteed to fail at some point, why not now?”
“Those posts show exactly who Merkel got into bed with. ”
Perhaps the devil whom Merkel got into bed with, in this case, was Obama – not Erdogan. Whether or not that is the case, now that Obama is gone, Merkel is free to do what’s good for her and Germany – or continue to do the opposite. She will be meeting with Trump soon. I understand that a (supposedly) coming blizzard has delayed the trip – but only temporarily. It gives Merkel time to think things through.
Maybe all this will help the AfD and Merkel’s CSU/CDU can forge a coalition with them after the election – despite vows not to – whatever happens with Merkel.
Doesn’t Merkel have her work cut out trying to convince Trump not to scale back on NATO?
Trump has said (words, not deeds) that he is just going to bail on NATO. Seems like his standard M.O. negotiating tactic. If the US simply scales back on NATO commitments, to what European “partners” do (less than half of the 2%GDP that was promised) — a lot of US bases in Europe will be contributing a lot less to local economies….
And I can’t imagine a scenario in which Trump is able to bail Merkel out of her problems. Immigration is a problem in the US. Obama made a mess of US-Turkey relations. And Trump is already talking about reducing financial contributions to WW2 relics like the UN, IMF, etc.
What do you see Merkel trying to get from Trump?
And where would Trump get the budget authority to do anything (deficit already requires Trump to make lots of cuts)?
“Doesn’t Merkel have her work cut out trying to convince Trump not to scale back on NATO?”
No. I think Trump has his work cut out for him if he really tries to scale back on NATO. The military/industrial complex is a powerful political and economic power base here. Trump may not be able to bail on NATO. Congress – not the President – has the power to tax, spend and borrow and every member wants some kind of military spending, if nothing else.
“What do you see Merkel trying to get from Trump?”
Permission to change her policies if she wants to be re-elected.
Your supposed to talk quietly but carry a big stick.
Trump shouts loudly about the size of the stick but doesn’t prove he can use it or that it even exists any longer.
Trump will FOLD.
Sorry but he does come across as a paper Tiger and the Germans know it.
Merkel will smile, nod, Trump will do the same, Germans not the least bit interested in what he says and will carry on their way. US will continue to import shed loads of German goods and defend the EU for free.
I see the US commitment to NATO getting drastically scaled back. Europe hasn’t kept its promise to contribute 2% of their GDP (England being the sole exception), and rhetoric aside Russia is does not have the economy or demographics to invade Europe. Also Putin wants power and wealth, not more debt. Europe was last century’s focal point.
Russia has already turned its attention toward Asia — running new energy pipelines, selling weapons systems, expanding train tracks, making trade agreements. China’s one belt / one road program is doing the same from their end. India too. The Saudi’s have noticed the world’s factories (and thus energy demand) moved to Asia — so the Saudi focus has too.
Anyway you cut it, if the US military industrial complex wants to remain relevant, they will have to reduce their obsession with last century hang-ups. Europe isn’t where its happening anymore, even the slow witted media sees this.
NATO doesn’t matter. The UK matters and the US matters — the rest of NATO does not. If the US needs diplomatic muscle in Asia, France doesn’t have it (it has a colonial past). Spain and Portugal don’t have it, but both have a colonial past. Singapore, India, South Korea, Australia (to name a few) have diplomatic strength in Asia that EU countries don’t.
No doubt, warmonger McCain will scream and throw a temper tantrum about the Ruskies or Commies or whatever nonsense. He ran for president and lost — he is last century just like Europe.
AfCom (Africa) is the newest military command group. NATO is fat guys eating caviar in Brussels with people who think the French language is still more popular than Spanish or Chinese. Maybe they can argue about the latest VCR releases while they are at it.
Want to talk Blue Rays? LED lighting? Sub 15nano integrated circuits? Rare earth metals? Than you go to Asia, not Europe
It would be short sighted for Trump to just blow off Germany or the UK… but at the same time he (and the military complex — not to mention the economy) need to look toward the future
@woodtendw — ” “What do you see Merkel trying to get from Trump?” Permission to change her policies if she wants to be re-elected.”
I don’t follow you… I don’t know why Merkel would want or need Trump’s permission to change policies. She has plenty of domestic reasons to change, even within her own party.
The US (with or without Trump) has plenty of reasons to refocus on Asia, and de-emphasize Europe and NATO.
Merkel probably wants to be seen as still relevant — hob nobbing on TV with the US president. She probably wants Ramstein AFB to stay open (because it adds billions to the local German economy). No doubt she wants German companies (especially VW) to maintain access to US markets.
But underneath it all — a scale back of NATO is in the cards regardless of Trump or Merkel (the US military has to shift focus to Asia). Trade is needed by both economies. Most of the meeting (which got postponed due to blizzard) is just for show, history and bigger economic trends already made all the decisions.
Merkel will have her work cut out for her if she thinks best of it for Germany to repatriate it’s sovereign gold stash from the FRB-NY vaults beneath the streets of Manhattan.
LOL, Trump will dismantle NATO before Angela gets any of her bling.
Hah! Erdogan calling *anyone* a “nazi”, after staging his own failed coup. Western Europe is ripe for slaughter.
Edrogan may have used the coup to further his own power consolidation and (likely falsely) discredit opponents, there still does not seem to be any evidence that Erdogan staged the coup himself, and it seems much more likely based on the events that it was, in fact, undertaken by secular members of the military on their own initiative.
The coup was real.
There was a group of soldiers that was supposed to kill Erdogan in a hotel he would be staying at but for some reason Erdogan left the hotel early and the soldiers shot up empty hotel rooms (there was interview after the coup attempt of some foreign tourists who witnessed the attack on the hotel).
.
Then Erdogan got onto his airplane and got messages that a coup was in progress after flying in the air and was trailed in the air by a supposedly coup controlled fighter jet but the pilot did not shoot him down.
The final failure was that the coup got the state tv channels under their control but Erdogan called a commercial tv channel from his jet and implored his supporters to get into the streets.
The coup managed to cut the commercial tv off the air hours later but then it was too late.
.
It is probable that among the coup plotters was someone loyal to erdogan who tipped him off about the planned attack and that would be why he left the hotel early
.
The fact that Erdogan is making Turkey an islamist country with Saudi inspired turkish version of sunni-ism is the fault of EU.
.
EU demanded as a condition to starting preliminary EU talks that the turkish army must be subjected to parliamentary rule completely so instead of being a defender of Ataturk’s secular vision of Turkey the turkish army was purged of ataturkists and most of the leadership was replaced with Erdogan loyalist islamists.
.
The coup was attempted years too late.
When Turkey descends into extreme islamism and oppression of minorities and removes rights from women everyone should remember that EU demanded that turkish army must be brought under parliamentary control which meant it was purged by islamist Erdogans islamist AKP party from all known secularists and ataturkists who respected Ataturk’s vision of Turkey as a secular state.
.
Turkey is becoming islamist also because of demographics.
Ataturkist westernized turks have for generations been making around 2 children per woman when backwards islamist women in the turkish countryside have been making 4-6 kids per woman and also starting the making of kids earlier than secularized turkish women.
.
Demographics are destiny.
Turkey will become an islamist country and it has an islamist leader in Erdogan because there are so many voters whose parents were islamists themselves and believed in islamism instead of believing in secularism and ataturkism.
Turkey to hit Europe with Muslim Bomb.
If Hillary had been in office she could have taken them as refugees!
Excellent! If Europe has any sense, they will now deport all their Turks back to Turkey.
Yikes! Here they come!
I’m picturing that Israel wall scene in Wold War Z.
Turkish voters are slated to cast ballots on April 16 on the introduction of a presidential system that would transfer virtually all power in the country to the president. But Erdogan has had a tough time persuading voters of the need for these reforms. These voters include those residing in the EU. His back is against the wall coming off his 1st coup d’etat.

At some point we will all end having to accept being called Nazis if we are to retain national autonomy.
What happens if some Dutch people (or US citizens or Chinese citizens) move to Turkey but live like Europeans or Asians?
Can my shop and its protestant workers stay open in Istanbul during the call to prayer?
Can the Chinese shopkeeper in Ankara only hire fellow Chinese, and refuse to hire Turks?
Anyone think a European can keep their shop in Riyad (Saudi) or Tehran open during the call to prayer?
This political correctness nonsense (which is all Erdogan’s nazi rhetoric is) isn’t scalable, and Erdogan knows it. Its all a PR campaign to extort German taxpayer money out of a weak and feeble Angela Merkel.
Mish, are you upset at the deal that Europe made with the Turks? The Europeans were not forced into it, and the Turks are not the ones sending the refugees, so why should the Turks help Europe for nothing? And why should anyone be upset the Turks are pulling out of the deal when Europe has not delivered on its side? And finally, why should it matter why Erdogan is autocratic? Putin is even more autocratic and holds illiberal social views and yet you (reasonably so) think Europe should make peace with him regardless.
As long as borders between Greece and rest of Europe are SHUT and there is NO TRANSFER by EU of asylum seekers from Greece to welfare paying parts of Europe there will be few people coming from Turkey to Greece because there is NO welfare and NO free apartments in Greece..
.
The previously agreed transfer and burden sharing of 160,000 asylum seekers from Greece and Italy to around EU needs to be CANCELLED (it still has about 140,000 places left because welfareseekers do NOT want to go to NO-welfare countries in EU and many welfare countries have taken just a few burden sharing asylum seekers.).
.
EU-commission plans for a permanent automatic burden sharing they presented in May 2016 need to be STOPPED from ever becoming reality because it would flood Europe with tens of millions welfareseekers
